PPC Minutes September 2015

  1. Present: Father Denys Lloyd, Breeda Godfrey, George Brooks, Miriam Ireland, Mary Mustoe-Arthur, Mary Haynes, Ann Davies, Mary Dalton, Russell Wright, Keith Holt, Diana Spalton
    Other Attendees: Father Tim Bugby, Deacon Andrew Neate and 4 parishioners.
    Opening Prayer for our Parish

God, the creator and giver of all good things, bless our Parish in this united endeavour. Strengthen our faith and grant us the spirit of sacrifice that, with your help, we may provide for the needs of our Parish, give glory to you and sanctify ourselves. We ask this through Christ our Lord Amen.

  3. Matters Arising
    item 12 changes were made by the Diocese after PPC Meeting.
    12 (2) Fund to be used
    only for accommodation for retired and non active priests
    12 (3) Youth mission team to be funded from Diocesan funds
    Parish target figure is in fact £120,000, includes the collection at Easter and Christmas for clergy.

  4. Finance Committee report
    Keith Holt reported that budgets were operating well. This October sees the Quinquennial report and plan, which identifies 5 year actions for maintenance and repairs etc. Feedback to next PPC meeting
    a. OLR Church and Hall has been decorated to a very high standard and the floor of the church is very good. Letter of thanks has been sent to decorators. Costs £2,000 for decorating and £3,000 approximately for the floor renovation.

  5. Council of Laity – Breeda reported that there had been no meeting of this group and she had asked Rebecca Bretherton about this. It appears that the attendance list is being used as a contact list for the New Evangelisation meetings (see item 11).

  6. Social and Fundraising Report.
    Father Tim reported. Activity has continued including parish walk organised by Deacon Andrew, a number of coffee mornings and home baking/produce stalls. The Committee is due to meet on 17th September to discuss plans for the Parish mass on 24th September and to plan the Harvest Supper for the 28th October. All welcome to attend.
    The Bacon butty event at Cromer was very successful and it is hoped to organise a similar activity at Sheringham.

  7. Food Bank
    Michael McMahon reported as Chair of Trustees. Nationally and locally take up of services has slightly dipped, down by about 7% cause as yet unknown and could be seasonal, this is being monitored. A centre has now been opened in Stalham, making 6 distribution centres. Trustees are being sought and recruitment will be in line with Charity Commission regulations. If necessary Father Denys will appeal via newsletter. Trustee dealing with recruitment is currently on holiday.

  8. Parish 100 Club
    Paul Finn and Peter Godfrey sent reports. Next draw 27th September Prizes: £65, 2nd prize: £40, 3rd prize: £26. Renewals are due to be sent out in October for the 2016 year. The same system as last year will be used i.e. completed forms and post-dated cheques to be placed in the collection baskets. Cheques post-dated to 1st January 2016. Father Denys to put update in bulletin.
    Paul Finn was formally thanked for all his hard work in setting up and running the scheme over 5 years.

  9. Paul Spellman (Student for Priesthood)
    All going very well, Paul has settled in well and is meeting with other students and the Bishop this week. All wished him well as he begins his studies.

  10. New Evangelisation 27th June
    Breeda Godfrey and Sean White attended. This second year is about evangelising the parish.
    This should be achieved by: prayer, study, giving and sharing. Some examples of parish activity were shared on the day with possible options to follow.
    All parishes are to be provided with a Posada, a statue of Our Lady and St. Joseph, this is to be moved around the parish during Advent providing an opportunity for prayer and sharing. Further details will be provided to the clergy. Father Tim to mention to Fundraising group.

  11. Home Mission Sunday
    Cards to be given out and Father Denys will preach and has copied a letter from Cardinal Vincent Nichols and Archbishop Peter Smith for inclusion in bulletin. Prayer for Catholics who are not regularly attending Church will be included at end of bidding prayers.

  12. Diocesan Celebration
    Lists in both churches for coaches to attend the torch lit Blessed Sacrament procession in Norwich on the 2
    nd October, followed by overnight Vigil and mass on Saturday 3rd at the Cathedral. It was hoped there would be good attendance at both events from our Parish.

  13. Norwich Deanery
    First meeting took place of the new Deanery. Father Denys is the Dean. About 16 clergy present. Next meeting in November in Costessey – annual requiem mass for deceased Priests and Deacons.

  14. Diocesan Fund Raising Project
    Father Denys reported that 5 weeks into the pilot projects response had been very good. CCS are delighted with the support which had already been pledged.
    In our parish Father Denys is still seeing some parishioners and the volunteer team are implementing the second phase of reaching other parishioners.
    Once we reach our £120,000 figures we will receive 75% back for the Parish Project.
    Michael reported on how SVP continues to work Canaan House in Sheringham to provide emergency temporary housing for the homeless across the local district. Michael talked about some recent admissions illustrating the practical support which he was now able to offer. The need for this Parish project has been clearly shown and Michael was thanked for his efforts. He accepted this on behalf of all involved and particularly thanks Adrian Rudman a member of the SVP from North Walsham. There were good working relationships with CAB to ensure that individuals were receiving assistance from agencies which should provide ongoing care.

  15. Dress Code
    Concern had been raised about the type of clothing worn by some visitors (male and female) during the summer months. It was agreed that visitors should be encouraged to attend Mass; however, there would be a visual poster of acceptable clothing/mobile phone off etc., an entry on the website and a mention in the welcome to visitors section of the bulletin. Some sarong type wraps would also be available at the back of church.

    a. parking at OLR – reminder to be placed in bulletin of need to keep exits clear, particularly near to Golf course
    b. Parish Pastoral Council membership – some terms of office are due to expire. Father and Breeda to discuss in November

    Posada will be present at the December meeting MMA & BG to organise.
