THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR (Year 'B')

Weekday Readings for Week 5 (Year II)

Psalms for Week 1

Eucharistic Prayer II at Masses this weekend

TODAY

WE CELEBRATE

EDUCATION SUNDAY

Dear Parishioners,

This Sunday the Church observes as 'EDUCATION SUNDAY'.  We pray for all who work in the realm of education.  We pray especially for all Catholic schools:  their staffs, pupils and governing bodies;  and also for the Catholic Education Services, for which there is Second Collection at all weekend Masses.

Bishop Malcolm McMahon, O.P., the Chairman of the Catholic Education Services, has published a letter to mark this Education Sunday.   In it he writes:

Our schools are a very significant way in which the Catholic community in England and Wales places itself at the service of society.

We are mindful that our educational institutions, many of which are among the very best I the country, depend on us for their success and their faithfulness to the evangelical commission to make disciples of all people.  They depend first of all upon the support and co-operation of Catholic parents, who are the first teachers of their children.  They depend on local parishes in whose mission and witness they share, and they depend on a great number of committed staff, who reflect in their own lives the joy that knowing Christ brings.

Our Catholic schools and colleges are a great treasure.  This treasure has been given to us and we must ensure that we hand it on to future generations.  Education is in a time of great change.  For some schools, this may mean working in new ways and in new relationships.  Whatever the challenges that we face, now or in the future, let us remain focussed on Christ in all that we do.

The Children's Liturgy and First Holy Communion Programme take place at St Joseph's during the 10.30am Mass on Sunday.

At St Joseph's, we are planning to introduce a new Mass Setting for Lent.  So, as I announced last weekend, Jim Laird, our Organist and Choir Master, will this Sunday lead a 'run through' and congregational practice of the new Setting at 10.15am - so that a really good start can be made on learning this simple and very attractive and melodious new Mass Setting (Archer's 'Mass of St. Peter').

ST JOSEPH'S CHOIR:   I would also like to make a renewed plea that some of our men at St Joseph's give real consideration to joining the Choir!  Jim Laird has done so much since he took over in September to enrich the music at St Joseph's, with, as he says, such good co-operation and enthusiasm from the Choir ladies. We have now reached the point when, to have some men in the Choir, would strengthen the singing so much. The Choir Practice is currently on Wednesdays at 5pm – so you would not even have to give up an evening....    Please do think about it.

Jim Laird himself writes:  'MEN OF THE CONGREGATION – the Choir desperately needs your support.  Sight-reading ability not essential; please don't feel shy about coming forward – singing is fun, come and enjoy it!   Not a huge commitment in time: Sunday Mass and Wednesday practice of only an hour.'

Please see me after Mass or phone 01263-713505 or e-mail: j.laird195@btinternet.com

A REFLECTION FOR EDUCATION SUNDAY -

from the LETTERS OF ST JOHN BOSCO

St John Bosco, the Founder of the Salesian Order, was born near Turin in 1815.  As a Priest, he devoted himself to the education and apostolate of boys and young men, mainly from the poorest and most deprived families. He opened workshops for training shoemakers and tailors.  He also, with Maria Mazzarello, founded an Order of nuns – the Daughters of Our Lady, Help of Christians – that would carry out similar work with girls.   The Salesian Order now numbers many thousands throughout the world.  It specializes in pastoral work and runs schools of all kinds, including technical and agricultural schools and ecclesiastical seminaries.

'If we want to be thought of as men who have the real happiness of our pupils at heart and help each to fulfil his role in life, you must never forget that you are taking the place of parents who love their children.  I have always worked, studied, and exercised my priesthood out of love for them.  And not I alone, but the whole Salesian Order.

My sons, how often in my long career has this great truth come home to me!   It is so much easier to get angry than to be patient, to threaten a boy rather than persuade him.   I would even say that it is usually so much more convenient for our own impatience and pride to punish them than to correct them patiently with firmness and gentleness.

I recommend to you the love St Paul had for his new converts.  When he found them inattentive and unresponsive to his love, the same love led him to tears and prayers.

Be careful not to give anyone reason to think that you act under the impulse of anger.  It is difficult to keep calm when administering punishment.  But it is very necessary if you are not to give the impression that you are simply asserting your authority or giving vent to your anger.

Let us look on those over whom we have a certain authority, as sons.   Let us be determined to be at their service, even as Jesus came to obey and not to command.  We should be ashamed to give the least impression of domineering.  We should only exercise authority in order the better to serve the boys.

This was how Jesus treated his apostles.   He put up with their ignorance and dullness and their lack of faith.  His attitude towards sinners was full of kindness and loving friendship.  This astonished some and scandalized others, but to others it gave enough hope to ask forgiveness from God.

Because the boys are our sons, we must put aside all anger when we correct their faults, or at least restrain it so much that it is almost completely suppressed.  There must be no angry outburst, no look of contempt, no hurtful words.  Instead, like true fathers, really intent on their correction and improvement, show them compassion at the present moment and hold out hope for the future.

In serious matters, it is better to ask God's help in humble prayer, than to make a long speech that wounds those who hear it and does no good at all to the guilty ones.
